KEY FACTS

THE LARGEST WEIR IN YORKSHIRE

 

  • The project is being developed on land owned by Wakefield Council and abstracting water from the Canal & River Trust’s Aire & Calder Navigation 

  • It will comprise a 500kW axial turbine which will protect fish and eels by a massive custom-designed inlet screen 

  • It will take over a year to build, employing over 80 man years in that period

  • When commissioned in late 2016 will:

    • deliver up to 500kW of capacity, expected to generate around 2,300,000 units (kWh) per annum

    • enough electricity to take around 800 average UK homes off the grid almost in perpetuity
